Indonesia's National Food Agency (Bapanas) has extended the relaxation of the retail price ceiling (HET) for premium-quality rice until May 31, 2024. The National Food Authority (NFA) assured Tuesday that it is preparing for the procurement and drying of play (unhusked rice) as early as now for the wet harvest season. The NFA’s move came shortly after it implemented a new and higher pricing scheme for palay on the tail-end of dry harvest season on Monday, with the price range now pegged at PHP17 to PHP23/kg.

Rice prices surged to their highest by Rs800 per kg per 25 kg of bag over a year in the Nepali market, according to the market analysis report of the National Consumer Forum. The record price rise has been attributed to India's restriction on exports of non-basmati white rice. India is the world's largest rice exporter, accounting for up to 40 percent of rice in the world market.

The International Grains Council forecasts that due to a decline in the number of key exporters, world rice production in 2023/24 is expected to decline slightly year-on-year, and total consumption and stocks are also expected to decline. World rice production is projected to resume an upward trend in 2024/25, driven mainly by growth prospects in the five major sectors, to reach a record 520 million tons (+2%), with consumption and stocks also expected to increase.

India's agricultural food exports in the 2023/24 financial year fell slightly short of the previous year, hitting about $50 billion as efforts to diversify shipments to the United States, Europe and other markets helped to offset curbs on rice, wheat and sugar exports. The export curbs were imposed by the world's second-largest producer of wheat, rice and sugar last year to rein in rising domestic prices.

Pakistan Rice exports surged by 83.37 percent during the initial three quarters of the current fiscal year, compared to the corresponding period last year. From July to March 2023-24, the country exported over 4.550 million metric tons of rice, amounting to $2.930 billion, contrasting with 2.939 million metric tons valued at $1.598 billion during the same period the prior year, as per data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
